The Elegant B&W Workshop

September 17, 2014

Rob Iden

Ok, I have to confess that my heart really sings for the beauty of the B&W image.  I love that the world of B&W belongs to photography alone, and we photographers get to play in that unique world.  However, this world also has its unique challenges…. it easier to produce mediocrity in B&W….. and so much more difficult to create compelling images!

And so Iden Ford * and I have created this two-day workshop exploring the world of the B&W image, from concept, through lighting and shooting, to the final print.

Iden and I will walk you through lighting approaches tailored to B&W shooting, both in studio and on location.  You’ll have plenty of time to light and shoot our models (experienced dancers) both in the studio and on location.

We’ll also demonstrate how to process and print your images for optimum impact in B&W.  Plus you’ll have an opportunity to print 3 of your best shots from the workshop!  Here’s the workshop schedule:

Day 1: Sunday, November 16  9:30- 5:30 in my studio in Liberty Village

Morning lecture/ discussion of what makes a great B&W image
Demo of examples of lighting our models for portraits, action and nudes.

Afternoon shooting our models in studio on a variety of sets and lighting styles.
You’ll be working in small groups of 3-4 with a model.

Day 2: Sunday November 23  8:30- 5:30 on location (TBD) and in my studio
Morning: Shooting on location for landscape and with models

Afternoon: Return to studio for demo of Lightroom B&W techniques.
Create prints of your best images from the workshop.

Cost for the workshop:
$595 (incl HST) for both days
$395 (incl HST) for one day
$200 deposit required to hold your spot

This workshop is limited to 12 students, so reserve early to guarantee a spot!

* I met Iden as a student at Ryerson, and he has since gone on to establish himself as a photographer, specializing in dance, performance and portraiture.  His work has been featured in The Toronto Star, The National Post, The Globe and Mail, SHIMMY magazine, Dance Ontario, Photoshop User Magazine, Lightroom Magazine, and Light It Magazine. He’s also an established educator, presenting workshops for Elinchrome Lighting at ProVision, and writing articles for Photoshop User Magazine.  I’m very excited to be co-presenting this workshop with him!

Explore the unique world of Black & White Photography

March 16, 2012

Black, white, shades of grey…. the world unique to photography.  Black and white was the original voice of the photographer, and is currently experiencing a resurgence of interest.  Our digital cameras, software and printers now allow us to create B&W images with tonal range, tonal control and print permanence that far surpass what we could achieve with film and chemicals.

Join me for a full day of exploring this fascinating world through this new workshop.  We’ll spend the morning examining the tools and techniques used to create stunning B&W renditions of our digital captures.  We’ll also look at how the B&W image differs from the world of color, and what we have to do to create powerful images in this unique medium.

In the afternoon you’ll work with your own images to make B&W prints on a variety of printer and papers.  We’ll work one-on-one to improve your images and produce prints you’ll be proud to display.  You’ll come away with a richer understanding of this uniquely photographic medium.

This workshop will take place in the state of the art digital classroom at 44 Wide, and we’ll have access to their printers (both Canon & Epson) to produce prints up to 24 in.

Workshop Details:
April 14   10:00- 4:00 (with a 1hr. lunch break)
Location: 44 Wide, 171 East Liberty Street, Unit 122
Cost: $250. including materials and HST
